The full day class follows the traditional Lean Six Sigma process improvement approach but allows students the opportunity to experience process improvement in a simulated work environment starting within the first few minutes of entering the classroom. The day’s schedule and topics include:

  • Lean Six Sigma phases overview
  • Value Add Analysis
  • Defining problems
  • Eliminating Waste
  • Project Chartering Basics
  • Sigma Quality Level
  • Measuring techniques
  • Brainstorming
  • Process Mapping
  • Solution Development
  • Analyzing Processes
  • Control Plans
Following the day’s events, participants will be Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt certified and will leave knowing how they can put Lean Six Sigma tools into practice in their daily work and how to make an immediate positive difference. Most importantly course attendees will never look at daily work the same way againNote: Ideal class size is between 15 and 20 students as the centerpiece of the curriculum is a highly interactive simulation exercise.

All employees and leaders who own processes. Ideally, this should be just about everyone in an organization; the key to sustainability and ongoing success is to systematically train work groups in the fundamentals of Lean Six Sigma so they are reasonably prepared to operate in a process improvement/management environment.

Why?

Because Lean Six Sigma-trained and certified employees and leaders are in the ideal position to recognize the gaps between targeted and actual performance; they are the ones doing the work in the first place.

Because Lean Six Sigma-trained and certified employees and leaders will return from their training better equipped to identify problems, map and analyze their work, eliminate non-value added process steps and activities, measure their results, and be more efficient and effective in everything they do.

Because every employee is essentially a first responder and is best positioned to confront and address issues from their immediate position.  They serve as the best line of defense against waste.

Because as more people are trained there will be an increased continuous process improvement awareness and drive to inculcate continuous process improvement as “the work habit”.

Because from energy companies to non-profits, success demands a workforce that is not only educationally and technically proficient, but also strategically flexible - able to adapt quickly and effortlessly to dynamic and constantly changing environments.

Simulation
People learn best by doing, so this course was designed around a fun and highly interactive simulation exercise where participants can learn and apply Lean Six Sigma methodology to develop optimal solutions for problems.  Serving as employees in an organization wrought with complexity, inefficiency, high overhead costs, and frustrated employees and customers, participants work as a business unit to:

  • Define—Describe the problem quantifiably, visualize the process, and understand customer needs
  • Measure—Understand the process and its current performance.
  • Analyze—Identify the true root cause(s) that has the biggest impact on process performance
  • Improve—Brainstorm and develop improvement solutions to attack root cause(s)
  • Control—Implement the solutions and sustain the gains.
Instructors

All instructors are certified Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belts, with significant teaching and facilitation experience.  These instructors also possess specialized expertise in balanced scorecard training, strategic planning, change leadership, and consulting in both profit and non-profit organizations.

Module 1 (Define):

Learning Objectives: Introduce participants; orient class to the tools and reference materials to be used during the class; outline course progression; explain the basic concepts, origin and reasons for adopting a Lean Six Sigma approach; run the first round of the course simulation and introduce essential Define phase tools.
  • Introductions & Rules of the Game
  • Lean Six Sigma Foundations
  • Simulation-Round 1
  • Problem Statement
  • Voice of the Customer
  • Process Mapping
Module 2 (Measure):
Learning Objectives: Explain and apply value and techniques involved with baseline measurement to derive system capabilities and shortcomings; define terms and data fundamentals; run the second round of the course simulation and apply the concepts of process lead time, efficiency measurement and sigma quality level.
  • Quick Wins,
  • Simulation-Round 2
  • Data Fundamentals
  • Intro to Lead Time
  • Process Cycle Efficiency & Sigma Quality Level
Module 3 (Analyze):
Learning Objectives: Identify and apply the most effective Lean Six Sigma problem analysis, customer evaluation, qualitative exploration and quantitative data analysis tools; explain how each tool can provide clarity to the system and process problems.
  • Value Add Analysis
  • Root Cause Analysis
  • Takt Time & Takt Rate Analysis
Module 4 (Improve):
Learning Objectives: Explain and apply effective techniques to utilize results from Lean Six Sigma and other commonly used statistical analysis methods; run the third round of the course simulation and introduce methods to develop improvement solutions, reconfigure work processes and optimize performance.
  • Simulation - Round 3
  • Brainstorming
  • Mistake Proofing
  • 5S techniques (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain)
Module 5 (Control):
Learning Objectives: Explain the Lean Six Sigma methods used to ‘sustain the gain’ achieved in any process improvement effort; explore techniques to hard wire new processes into existing organizational methods and create a culture of continuous vigilance, reliability and efficiency.
  • Implementing the Control Plan

Feedback from past participants:

Imaginnovation™ simulation drove home the overall concept of Lean and how it can be easily applied in even the most unorthodox of professions, such and Emergency Services. We learned that not all waste looks like waste - it hides in plain sight and in all shapes and forms.”

“[Scott’s] delivery keeps your attention and helps you learn and retain the practical and applicable concepts in his talks.”

“As a facilitator, Scott provided activities, guidance, and input that allowed everyone to feel invested and heard, and that helped the group proceed productively and effectively. We on the team did not always agree about every detail, but, as an accomplished facilitator, Scott helped us find a working path throughout.”
